Terrence Higgins Trust : Since 1982 we’ve been supporting people impacted by HIV and poor sexual health.
On 4 July 1982, Terry Higgins was one of the first people in the UK to die of an AIDS-related illness – due to the bravery of his partner he was the first to be named. By honouring Terry in the title of the trust, the founder members – his partner and friends – hoped to personalise and humanise AIDS in a very public way.
Early volunteers and staff established the helpline, the Buddy scheme, counselling, legal advice and a hardship fund. As the epidemic changed, so did the organisation and our services.
Today the advice line THT Direct is a one-stop shop for many. We also support people living with HIV with a hardship fund, counselling, work support, peer-to-peer support to come to terms with their diagnosis, and we campaign for change.
Together we can end new cases of HIV by 2030, support people living with HIV and impacted by poor sexual health.
Our HIV testing services
We offer free HIV testing in our many of our centres in England, Scotland and Wales. In many locations these are appointment only as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
As well as offering tests at our centres, we also go out to places like schools, colleges, churches and local community centres to offer HIV testing.
If it’s not possible for you to test at one of our centres, or you’d rather do so in your home, you can order an HIV testing kit to be delivered to you by post.
You may be eligible for our low-cost self testing service, which is currently free in some areas and also provides a free tests to those in the rest of the country who can’t afford to pay. We also offer free HIV postal tests for people living in the Essex County Council and Thurrock Council areas.
